BudgIT goes mobile
The award-winning budget and public data management, BudgIT now has a mobile site. After going live more than a year ago, the Team Lead of BudgIT, Oluseun Onigbinde, decided it was time to go mobile since more than 50% of internet access from the country is from mobile.
BudgIT is a product of TechIn, Governance Edition which is an initiative of Co-creation Hub and launched formally in September, 2011. Since then, it has transformed the way Nigerians view data especially the budget which hitherto was a cumbersome and very confusing process for the average citizen.
BudgIT got into the limelight however during the now-almost-forgotten #OccupyNigeria protests in January, 2012 garnering over 3000 followers within a few days. It went ahead to launch a Budget Cut application which gave people the ability to reduce government spending in sectors where they felt was necessary.
With a total of over 2.5 million hits on their website, the launch of the mobile version will definitely boost traffic to the portal as Nigerians are becoming hungrier for data which BudgIT provides and calls for open data abound. The data which the average Nigerian is interested in is now available, literally at their finger tips. Definitely, we foresee a drastic change in the use of data by the citizenry.
