I wrote recently about the looming explosion in the online ad network industry in Nigeria. For couple of days now, you will notice that Nairaland now place 2 ads on its homepage, one from Google Adsense and the other from the new ad network; adplacers.com. The startup will officially launch to the general public in the next 2 weeks.

I can predict that with this deal, Nairaland will be smiling to the bank with at least One million naira per month. With this deal, one could conclude that offer made by MIH to acquire 60% of the site for N2.4million is extremely too low.

In a chat with Nairaland founder, Seun Osewa, he revealed to me that he might sell for a good price…and when asked what the good price could look like…he said, you know what’s cool? Twenty Five Billion Naira. The question on my mind is…is this guy planning to take over Sango Ota from President Obasanjo (They both live in that area)? For about five years now, this has been his valuation of the site; well maybe someday it could be worth that much.

InMobi, the mobile ad-serving company focusing emerging market has just release report for the first quarter 2011 of ad impression in Africa. Nigeria witnessed the highest growth with a whopping 36% increasing between December 2010 and March 31 2011.

2.8% growth in African Mobile Ad Impressions in first 3 Months of 2011 says InMobi
… Over 3.6 billion Mobile Advertising Impressions a Month in Africa on InMobi’s Network Alone …

Johannesburg, May 17, 2011 – InMobi, the world’s largest independent mobile advertising network, today released its latest Africa Regional Insights. These provide a snapshot of mobile advertising trends on the continent between December 2010 and March 2011. Data from the report shows that InMobi now serves over 3.6 billion impressions a month in Africa and that these mobile ad impressions have grown consistently by 3% during the period.

Africa specific data includes:

· 36% growth in mobile impressions in Nigeria in the period

· 16% growth in mobile impressions in Kenya the period

· Nokia OS holds 36.9% impression share, followed by Symbian OS at 25.9% and RIM OS at 2.9%

The data also indicates that while 8 out of 10 mobile adverts in Africa are delivered on either a Nokia or Samsung device, when it comes to smart phonesplatforms in Africa, RIM reigns supreme; although RIM/iPhone OS/Android collectively only represent 4.1% of the total Africa ecosystem. In fact, in just 2 months, RIM has grown 2,5% share points while Nokia, which owns the majority market share (in total number of handsets, rather than just smartphones), has remained static.

“RIM Blackberry’s growth during the period is proof that the lowering cost of data plans and devices will lead to smart phone adoption in Africa,” comments Isis Nyong’o, Vice President and Managing Director InMobi Africa. “It will be critical to track both RIM and Android market penetration as a key to growth in mobile advertising ecosystem”

The report also showed that South Africa, Nigeria and Egypt represent the largest mobile markets in Africa. South Africa maintains position as the largest of thesewith in excess of 850 million impressions a month.

James Lamberti, VP of Global Research & Marketing at InMobi says, “Africans continue to increase their mobile media consumption with both advanced phone and smartphone uptake growing at a consistent pace in the last quarter. However, advanced phones still dominate with 81% market share, so smartphones have yet to gain significant traction.”

It’s quite interesting to see a Nigerian start-up take its product to where every dick and harry can see what it offers.

Since last week have been seeing DealDey.com (a group buying website we blogged about recently) adverts on BRT (Business Rapid Transport) buses in Lagos, this weekend I actually took time to take the picture and blog about it. It’s more or less no big deal but it is BIG deal because the service is targeted at shoppers and taking the product (uncommon product) directly to them is a revolution in the Nigerian web space.

With the site going mainstream I expect to see urge transaction on its deals going forward… what do you think?

As Facebook continues its search for profitability, it has to selectively choose which African country to focus on. Apparently, South Africa is a country of choice given the technology advancement in the country. Though Egypt and other African countries have considerable user base, but if they are unable to affect Facebook bottom-line, I think will be a huge liability to the company.

Should we say the recession is over? Well may not be far from the truth! Between 2008, online advertising was growing massively year-over-year, then comes the recession and everyone looked watched their pocket before spending.

<break/>
The US is a model country for the possibilities the internet usage holds and everything that is yet to happen in other parts of the world is already happen down there. Looking at the chart, the growth was almost flat between 4Q of 2001through 3Q 2003 after that it’s been growth all the way.

IAB (Interactive Advertising Bureau) report stated that online advertising revenues in the U.S. climbed 2.6 percent annually in the fourth quarter to $6.3 billion, and were up 13.8 percent from the previous quarter. Worldwide growth for last quarter of 2009 was 10.2%. Please not that internet usage is still in its infancy in most countries in the world. Google’s international revenue was 53% for 2009. It’s obvious why US companies are aggressively growing their international presence.

Breakdown of Ads revenue by segments

Search: $10.7 billion (47 percent)
Display: $8 billion (35 percent)
Classifieds: $2.3 billion (10 percent)
Lead Generation: $1.5 billion (6 percent)
Email marketing: $292 million (1 percent)

Google controls almost 70% of the search ads market and have good stake in display revenue too.

For other emerging markets, it can only get better now and in years to come as more startups are runs on ad-driven business model.

I have said a time and again that; Nigerian web industry will witness a shift this year, yea… a shift! The move will include penetration to the mainstream, new business models, more engaging site and site with local contents.

Smsadsng.com is powered by txtoweb.com a relatively new company but with advance technology. Text to web helps you advertise on the web via SMS, you simply enter you pitch of not more than 160 characters, send it to the short codes, and people on the web sees it live!

The New Deal

Many classified ads websites emerged last year; leading the pack is nairalist.com founded by Seun Osewa the owner of nairaland.com. Many other websites offering same service have come on board. To take it a little further, smsadsng.com makes it more flexible to get the message out. Creating a niche in the classified ads space.

The Real Deal

As the advertisement market expands, this site has shown a new way to tap the growing market in Nigeria.

Down Side

Well as the case in traditional advertising industry, the number of eyeballs to a large extents determine the price and growth. This site is relatively new and currently gets less traffic than some other Nigerian sites. Each time ad is added to the site, the older one goes down the trail. This I think will not afford some ads to be seen by targeted audience. The site is currently being pushed via Google and Facebook ads.

Business Model

This employs a small fee to get listed on the ad page, hence the business model employed by this site, simply advertisement! It’s a good market and will eventually grow in the coming years in Nigeria.
