Well, some may say, it is rather late the never. After making billions of dollars from the phone around the world, Apple now sees Nigeria as a viable market for the esteemed product.

For the past couple of months we have been sniffing around for a possibility of the phone being made available in Nigeria. We got an insider scoop from a reliable source, and we can confirm it! YES! The phone is expected to be available for sale on multiple networks. Between now and first quarter of 2011, you should expect the buzz!

Before now, the phone is available in these African countries except for Africa’s largest telecom market (Shame? Business?, I…i don’t know!);

Cameroun

Centre Afrique

Côte d’Ivoire

Egypt

Guinea-Bissau

Guinée

Guinée Equatoriale

Kenya

Madagascar

Mali

Mauritius

Niger

Sénégal

South Africa

Tunisia

Uganda

Some of the questions that now come to mind are;

Is iPhone coming into one of the world largest telecoms market too late?

Can iPhone battle the Blackberry craze in the country?

How will this impact (the expected) growing impact of Android in Nigeria

What does this mean for Nokia N8?

What do you think?

To the amazement of attendees at the ongoing World Wide Developer’s conference (WWDC) held in Washington today, Steve Jobs in his usual style released the much awaited iPhone 4G with features directly competing with Android based HTC EVO 4G released last week. The future of tech and internet at large is mobile, it’s quite cool to see the future invented now!
<break/>
iPhone 4G Features Vs EVO 4G

Apple iOS Close Platform against Android Open Platform

Apple officially named is OS today iOS which is at the core of the iPhone. The OS is apparently closed and requires Apple to certify every app built for the platform. Android on the other hand is open and allows many mobile phone manufacturers to use the OS while developers anywhere around the world can build app without Google’s knowledge.

This battle can be likened with Apple’s battle with Microsoft in the early OS war on PC and Mac in the ’80. Apple eventually lost the battle as Microsoft stole the show worldwide and controlled the PC market.

No doubt, Apple raised the bar in smart phone market, but you know smartphone is going mainstream and what brought Apple here might not take it to the next level as billions of people around the globe plans to “get smart” with mobile phones.

Apple Market Cap. Surpasses Microsoft

Apple continuous innovation has pushed it well above Microsoft Market capitalization (number of shares multiply by current market prices). Apple currently has $228.34B while Microsoft has $221.64B while Google is $154.63B.

Google search and Bing Deal

As we wrote last week about the rumour of default search engine on the iPhone, Bing has now been added to the choice search engine but Google remains the default search engine (as again the rumoured removal). I believe Apple has listened to the comments from its fans about preferred search engine. It was a difficult decision for Apple to take given the battle its currently waging again Google.

Google AdMob Vs Apple iAd

Google Acquired admob for $750M late last year (but clarified just last month) while apple acquire Quattro earlier in the year. Apple has also reviewed its term in a way that can hinder Admob performance. Platforms make money from app sales, mobile ad is also a massive money making machine that the two companies are setting their sights on.

What’s in for Nigeria and Africa?

As far as Apple is concern, there is no real plan for the African market. While Google and Android continue to push technology down to Africa, Apple might lost it before it eventually wake up the potential of the African market. Many people still use the iPhone in Africa but you really cant compare it with what’s available in the US.

Remember, the iPhone will be available for purchase 24th of June, this is to water the appetite of the daring consumers and starts from $199!

The battler between the two tech giants just got fiercer since the refusal of Apple to approve Google Voice application on iPhone and subsequent resignation of Eric Schmidt ( Google CEO) from Apple’s board.

Currently, both companies are competing in mobile technology, mobile ads and OS. As they now right into same territory, each now have their turfs to protect.
<break/>
Apple will be launching is new version of iPhone next month, and romour around has it that, Apple is set to replace Google with Bing as the default search engine on iPhone. The deal has ran for 3 years and was said to be worth $100 million a year. It will be a super win for Bing and Microsoft seem to be out of fashion in the smart phone market!

Strategically, it’s a smart business (taking out users’ loyalty to Google) to do as Apple as being taking various steps to protect it’s cashcow products. Apple recently banned application developed with Adobe software.

Google on the other hand as we all know, has contiued it’s innovation and launching couple of products and deals. Google’s acquisition of AdMob was recently clarified by FTC and Google TV was also announced a week ago..

The bottomline

Don’t expect the battle to settle down any time soon, technology is converging to mobile so they are both trying to own the future! Looking at how things are shaping up and historically, it might favour Google in the long run. It’s Android is open and available to other phone manufacturer (which will improve adoption) while Apple’s iPhone is closed. Android users are increasing by the day and will surely continue.

Apple on the other hand is not sleeping; it launched iPad less than two months ago and have sold more than 2 million units. Apple TV has also been romoured to be sold for $99.

The battler has just started, let’s keep a tab!
