That is an average of 1,946 comments and 2,117 likes on each comments. The post is driven mostly of praise singers but more aggressive people are joining the page and asking the president serious questions like the proposed 10billion for the Nigeria at 50 Anniversary and electoral reform.

Any impact so far?

On monday the president announced to rescind his decision to suspend super eagles from international competition qouting some of the comments on the facebook page as the reason for taking the decision. Should we say the president is connecting perfectly with the people? Only time will tell!

During the time of writing this article… another 156 has joined the president’s page making it 100,156!

What is you view so far about the presidents Facebook presence?

If you can’t measure it, you can’t manage; so goes the saying! We believe that if we are able to quantify Nigerian websites and internet market as a whole, the better the possibilities of attracting investors. Our last year’s “Nigerian Internet Report” was eye-opening but this year, we have taken it a step further by checking more metrics that gave us sense of how much an internet company/website really worth.

We have outlined here 20 biggest Nigerian web properties for the half-year 2010. The full report will be available by before the end of July. The revelation we got from this makes me want to share with us what is going on in the Nigerian Internet market.
<break/>
What makes a site worth millions of dollar or even Naira?

Well as it has been revealed by the top internet properties in the world; Google, Yahoo, Facebook, Amazon, eBay etc, the value of what they do and the network effect or number of people who are able to use their services (more than anything else) determines the worth of the companies.

The keywords there are;

Visitors to the site; How many people goes to this site daily, month or year?

Page views: How long do people stay on these sites? How many pages do they view on it?

What they sell: The biggest web property in the world is Google, what do they sell? Ads! To how many people? Millions! Through how many sites? Millions! This includes the visitors to their site and on their network sites. Same goes for Yahoo, Amazon and others.

Consistence: How are they able to sustain this number of visitors over a period of time? Do they grow over the years? Facebook is close to 500million active users now (those who come to the site at least once a month, I bet you go there many times a day)

To arrive at our selection, we have followed most of the sites we profiled for the past 18 months….yes… one and a half years!

So I present to you, a list of top Nigerian Web properties for half-year 2010.

We will include more sites to at least 60 sites in our full report. Expect it soon!

What does this mean?

It means that the Nigerian internet market is on the rise, we are still waiting for your own start-up. We expect to see more sites before the end of the year. These are just 20 sites and are worth more than 600 million Naira, wow!

The year just halved! What has happened thus far? Ok. In a separate report, we will detail key happenings in the web industry in the country, internet growth pattern and trends. But first off, let’s look at sites that have made leaps this recent month.

The top sites

I’m still looking for that site that will effectively take on Nairaland on the number one spot; if you have that brilliant idea and you “sure” it can challenge its dominance, bring it on!

Nairaland.com remains at the number one spot, while punchng.com is sitting tight on the second spot for 5 consecutive months now! Vanguardngr.com has regained the 3rd spot after been overtaken by gtbank.com, thisdayonline.com and sunnewsonline.com. Moving up 1 spot and followed closely by gtbank.com which also moved 2 spots up.
<break/>

Thisdayonline.com dropped 2 spots to stay on the 5th spot while nigeriagalleria.com moved up two places to stay on the 6th spot.

On the top ten, when you see sites going up in ranking definitely some should be losing out so is the case of 234next.com; it is the biggest casualty in the top ten cadre, losing 4 places.

This month we also have a new entrant to the top ten, unilag.edu.ng; it moved a whopping 15 places to stay on the ten spot displacing nigerianbestforum.com.

Top Ten drop outs

Nigerianbestforum.com and ngrguardiannews.com are the two drop out from the top ten list this month. Taking a look at our historical ranking, no site has held the spot for 2 consecutive months in the last 6 months, it either move up or drop out.

fourpointcl.com

gamen11.com

Overall, we have couple of sites still making the top 50, this we believe is a sign of consistency. A very disturbing concern remains the fact that news sites still make up 60% of the top ten most visited Nigerian sites.

The performance of the super eagles in the ongoing world cup did tell on some sites (fansconnectonline.com and completesports.com) as the competition was very instrumental in their rise consequently it is also instrumental in their continuous downward trend.

Above all, an upbeat still remains in the Nigerian internet market… We are currently compiling the report for half year trends in Nigerian Internet Market our Web Trends Magazine will be out this week.

Another month just went by as we march right on to the mid year. In what has become our norm every month, let’s take you through top Nigerian sites for last month of May.

As usual, Nairaland.com remains on the top spot! In fact am looking for the Nigerian site that will displace Nairaland. It’s been consistent for the past 5 years. Punchng.com that was a contender last year, lost it due to its ill-informed strategy. After the decision was reverted, it has found very difficult to give Nairaland a fight! Punchng.com sits comfortably on the second spot. Thisdayonline.com also maintained the 3rd spot while vanguardngr.com moved two places to the 4th spot. 234next.com also moved 2 places to the 5th spot while gtbank.com drop another 1 spot having drop 1 last month, dropping another this month is a sign something could be wrong, aren’t people orange friendly again?<break/> The biggest casualty on the top-ten is naijahotjobs.com which dropped 5 places and eventually dropped out of the top-ten. Nigeriagalleria.com, ngrguardiannews.com and nigerianbestforum.com are on the 8th, 9th, and 10th spots respectively. Nigeriagalleria.com, made it to the top ten this month with a staggering, 3 places move to push naijahotjobs.com out of the top ten!

Today comes a very big news, Virtual Terminal Network (VTN) is set to raise N1.5 billion ($10Million) in private placement. I got the scoop in my mail just this morning.

The fund is said “… will be used for the expansion of the company’s network, enhance its working capital and increase its operational capacity.”

The placement comprises of 1,520,000,000 ordinary shares of N1.00 each at N1.05 per share. This means that with about N55,000 you can participate.

Remember, this is a private place and not IPO. It’s usually opened to institutional investors and not the general public. If you are one, why not request for info here.

Growth in South Africa has saturation point while Egypt, Tunisia and morocco are all fast rising. Egypt added the highest number of users (392680) between February and now followed by Morocco (345, 380), Tunisia 309,920 and Nigeria, 155,480. Egypt added almost as much users the total number of Ghana, Facebook users.

As Facebook continues its search for profitability, it has to selectively choose which African country to focus on. Apparently, South Africa is a country of choice given the technology advancement in the country. Though Egypt and other African countries have considerable user base, but if they are unable to affect Facebook bottom-line, I think will be a huge liability to the company.

Nairaland.com still on top, while punch continues pushing hard after nairaland.com. The most significant move this month is Gtbank.com that intelligently used social media to connect with its customers.

Both nairaland.com and punchng.com remains flat in their respecting positions 1 and 2. Gtbank.com is on the third spot moving 4 places. Vanguardngr.com lost another 1 spot to drop to 4th place. Sunnewsonline.com, thisdayonline.com and 234next.com are on the 5, 6, and 7 place as both thisdayonline.com and 234next.com dropping 2 places.

As usual looking at how Nigerian website feared in the recent month. It again no surprise that nairaland.com remains on the top spot but its good to note how punchng.com rally from shadow of its formal glory to take back the second spot. We predicted last month that punchng.com will battle it out between 1st and 2nd spot this month; yeah indeed it proved us right. While vanguardngr.com relinquished the second spot for the veteran punchng.com. thisdayonline.com is back again with a massive push upward to stand on the fourth spot while 234next.com also ramp up 3 places to stay on the 5th spot.

Sunnewsonline.com dropped just 1 place as gtbank.com leads the banking industry on the 7th spot. Ngrguardiannews.com gained just a spot while nigeriagalleria.com shed the most places in the top-ten losing 6th points. Nigerianbestforum.com remains on the 10th spot as it as last month.

You can view the full table here for the current and historical ranking. This review covered the top fifty.

Top Ten

vanguardngr.com

thisdayonline.com

nigeriagalleria.com

nigerianbestforum.com

The Mover

Let’s look at the top movers for February;

Technologytimesng.com 32

Ican-ngr.com 26

Sompassnews.net 22

Independentngonline.com 20

Smsbag.com 19

Nigeriamasterweb.com 18

The Shakers

These sites could not keep-up with the heat, so they shed points;

Jambutme.com 14

Buyright.biz 9

Jobberman.com 8

bbnplace.com 7

naijahotjobs.com, nigeriagalleria.com 6

The most significant shaker for month is nairalist.com

Debutants

It’s lovely to see that Nigerian web industry is active and adding many more sites daily. A total of 3 sites debuted on our ranking list. etisalat.com.ng topped the list having been able to break into the top-forty.

Etisalat.com.ng

Nigerianelitesforum.com

Multilinks.com

Drop outs

These sites eventually dropped out of our top-fifty Nigerian sites;

platgroupng.com

arikair.com

Bellanaija.com

50kobo.com

flyaero.com

nigerianscomplain.com

nairalist.com

The Nigerian web industry is waking up as more startups are being launched from Nigerians at home and in Diaspora. News sites still dominate the top-ten site as more local contents are still needed to water the appetite of Nigerian internet users. I hope the events lined up for this year will help address these needs.

Note: Our ranking is based on Alexa Internet ranking system. We select Nigerian sites from the bunch to arrive at our ranking. This review is based on the top fifty Nigerian sites that we ranked.

I last reviewed Facebook Users across (Selected) African countries in August here. Another look at the users’ increment is outlined below. Let’s first take a look at Nigeria’s Facebook Users;

Total: 901,840
Male:577,580
Female:313,560
18 and above:866,960
25 and above:519,460

The total users’ of 901,840 represents a total of 27% or 244,480 new users from last review (August). The gender structure shows a sharp difference from male and female as the Male users edge the Female counterpart with 577,580 and 313,560 respectively. If you say Facebook is not yet for kids in Nigeria, you are quite far from being wrong as a whopping 866,960 or 96% are above 18 years of age. Also a look into the adult usage shows that Facebook is widely used among working class Nigerians above the age of 25; representing 57% of the total Facebook users from Nigeria. I look forward to seeing Nigerians on Facebook crossing the 1 Million mark by the end of the year.

Across Africa, Nigeria is placed fourth among top countries with Facebook users. Nigeria comes behind Morocco which is the third and South Africa being the first and seconded by Egypt. South Africa added more users than any other African country with as much as 422,200 or 18% followed by Egypt with 342,760 or 16% then Nigeria 244,480 or 27%. Morocco added 222,540 or 21%, Tunisia 198,900 or 22%, Kenya added 128,320 or 25% lastly Ghana with 82,280 or 29%.

Facebook usage is wildly popular in South Africa with more than half (50.4%) of Internet Users in South Africa represented on Facebook. Tunisia followed with 45% of its Internet Users registered with Facebook, then Ghana 29%, Egypt 17%, Kenya 15.2%, Morocco 10.2%, and Nigeria 8.2%.

Facebook has already reached the mainstream in the US and other developed countries. In South Africa, Facebook growth has been phenomenon as it as it is reaching the mainstream gradually.

You are welcome to yet another ranking review of Nigerian site for October. We have extended our reach to cover 95 websites and we shall review the top 50 in this article. You can view the ranking table here.

Movers

Our top movers for the month is Naijaloft.com, which moved 21 places follow by Informationnigeria.org (19 places) and gtbplc.com 18 places.

Shakers

Site that dropped most places from the ranking table; 9jabook.com 12 places, independentngonline.com 8 places, and nigeriamasterweb.com 7 places. This shows that most didn’t drop too much compare to how much the movers moved.

Top ten

It is quite encouraging to see how things have changed in the last 30 days, in the top-ten last month we had 60% of the sites from the news sub-sector, but things have changed slightly this month. Gtbplc.com made the top-ten after a long spell off the circle, spending the last five months wandering up and down the table.

As usual, nairaland.com remains the no. 1 site in Nigeria but this time around followed by vanguardngr.com which replaces sunnewsonline.com that now stands on the 4th spot. nigeriagalleria.com arrived on the top five last month and now stamping its authority by moving 2 places to the 3rd spot, its first time ever on this spot. ngrguardiannews.com dropped a point to stand on the 5th spot.

naijahotjobs.com failed to lift a leg from last month’s spot remaining on the 6th spot, what’s happening to the top job hunting forum? thisdayonline.com, 234next.com both remained on the same spot they were last month, this shows steady but no increasing site hits for these two sites.

Gtbplc.com is one of our top mover for this month, climbing 18 spots to the 9th spot as nigerianbestforum.com stands on the 10th spot with 3 places move up the table.

Top twenty

There is no much upset from this list as most of the sites here last month also made the list excerpt for goodlife.com.ng that dropped from the top-ten to 11th place. punchng.com continued its journey downward by dropping yet another 2 points to now stand on the 13th spot. tribune.com.ng and nairalist.com dropped 5 places to stand on the 14th and 19th spots respectively as Saharareporters.com sealed the 20th spot.
