Pidgin english is a simplified English language people in Nigeria use for casual conversation.
A project developed by 9ja BusStop; the Facebook application hopes to translate the Christian Bible to pidgin English.

Most visited Nigerian sites in February 2010

As usual looking at how Nigerian website feared in the recent month. It again no surprise that nairaland.com remains on the top spot but its good to note how punchng.com rally from shadow of its formal glory to take back the second spot.

NetNaira.com another Nigerian e-payment site

If you have been following this blog since the start of the year, you will notice a growing pattern in the Nigerian web space. I wrote last time about an e-payment service for Nigerian (FasteCash).

Interswitch webpay, a dying goldmine

Interswitch the leading payment gateway in Nigeria, in fact has a near monopoly stronghold on the e-payment industry in Nigeria.

I was reading through Techcrunch and came across this post. Silicon Valley technocrats are drumming up support for the bill proposed by Senator John Kerry (D-MA) and Richard Lugar (R-IN) to be discussed next week Thursday.

Innovation Hub lands in Kenya

If there is a country on African soil that has shown consistent commitment towards technology development in recent time, I sure will choose Kenya! Kenya is home to M-Pesa and some other innovative technologies.

Facebook worth $11.5billion, Twitter $1.4billion, Linkedin $1.3billion

Whether you want to say, social networking is fun or business, I guess a company worth over a billion dollars is no more a child’s place.
Facebook is the world largest social networking site with over 400 million users worldwide. Oh! 400 M, yeah! 400million eyeballs you can market to!

Nigerian Blogger Featured on Oprah Show

Nigeria internet scene has been growing massively on the positive side, Google recently stamped its footprint on the Nigerian Internet Market last month; as other large scale investment is going on to harness the potential of the Nigerian internet market.

Zain Nigeria not for sale to Bharti

Mobile provider ECONET is making attempts to block any possible sale of Zain Nigeria to Bharti Airtel of India. According to Bloomberg, CEO of Econet, Strive Masiyiwa says his company has the first option to buy the stake acquired by Zain.

Egypt’s Orascom, eighth largest mobile network in the world

The past decade has been a highly successful one for the leading Middle Eastern and African operators. PRTM, a global management consultancy, has a new report in which it says that Egypt’s Orascom Telecom has become the eighth largest mobile network in the world by customer numbers. As a result, the company is now ahead of some of the well-established international operators.

As Nigeria ecommerce market continues its aggressive growth, ishopinlondon.com joins the league of site launch this year.

Mpesa comes to South Africa

In a move that could pitch Vodacom competitively against local banks for the first time, its parent Vodafone has announced that it will launch M-Pesa, Kenya’s wildly popular mobile money transfer service, in SA.

Africa Meet AppStore

Apple in a bid to consolidate usage of its products in Africa, Apple on the 18th of February launched the AppStore for Africa. This will make buy app for Apple platform for African countries easier. Countries listed are: Botswana, Kenya, Madagascar, Mali, Mauritius, Niger, Senegal, Tunisia, and Uganda. The question you may want to ask is where is Nigeria on the list?

Facebook Drives 44 Percent Of Social Sharing On The Web

If you are still wondering why Google is pushing so hard with its new product Buzz, it is because it wants in on social traffic. For many sites on the Web, social traffic coming through Facebook, Twitter, and MySpace is beginning to rival, and in some cases overtake, search traffic as the single biggest source of traffic. This traffic comes from shared links, photos, and videos. By its own numbers, 5 billion pieces of content are shared on Facebook every week.

Microsoft Fights Google With Google-Hosted Videos

Yesterday, we saw Microsoft shamelessly go after the iPhone with a video which played at Mobile World Congress for its new Windows Phone 7 Series. But it’s not just Apple that Microsoft is taking on with videos, it’s competitors like Google and OpenOffice.org as well.

This is a guest post by Tiffany Philippou who started the Secret London Facebook Group. Two weeks after launch the group had amassed over 180,000 members, propelling its 21 year old creator into her first startup – see our previous coverage.

As Google increase its penetration in Africa, it has improved effort to put Africa on Google Map. Haven launched the products in Kenya and South Africa, this latest effort is a big step forward in reaching the Africa audience.

G-Nigeria kick starts with day one

Google starts the much anticipated event, G-Nigeria in university of Lagos on Thursday 17th of February. The event saw a large turn-out and the auditorium was filled up. Google introduced its technology to the African developer and how to market better use of them. Google believe, than local developers are needed for the next phase of advancement on internet.

G-Nigeria Day two

The second day accommodated technopreneur, web markets and business people with interest in Google. This day was the best day I must say, well organized and coordinated. Google top products, Adwords and Adsense were explored and questions answered from the audience. The entrepreneur and VCs, session was mind blowing as young people asked the VC how to raise fund, develop business mentoring.

G-Nigeria Day three

On Friday was the focus on Computer Science students, a repeat of day one but focus was made on the students. Google believe the university community and students are the next point to expect great idea, hence the need to help them get started faster. Students asked question from the G-team and was delighted to learn from Google.

African mobile market up 20%

Mobile subscribers in Africa have reached 448.1 million, this according to a report produced by Ovum Research.

Twitter Hires a CFO From Pixar

This is the year that Twitter is slated to start monetizing in a big way. Along those lines, the company has just hired a chief financial officer by way of Pixar Animation Studios.

Facebook Fixes News Feed, Still Irritates Users

Facebook has responded to a news feed issue that users have been experiencing and bellyaching about. On its Facebook Page, the company posted:
“We’ve heard from many of you who are seeing a delay in your News Feed posts. We’ve fixed this issue and you should see your News Feeds gradually return to normal. Thanks for your feedback.”

Online Retail Spending Reaches $39 Billion In Q4

Online retail spending in the U.S. in the fourth quarter reached $39 billion, a 3 percent increase compared to a year ago, according to the latest report from comScore.
Total retail ecommerce spending reached $129.8 billion in 2009, slightly lower than the previous year’s total of $130.1 billion.

How Over 400 Million People Use Facebook

Last week, as Facebook celebrated its sixth birthday, the company announced that it was surpassing the 400 million-user milestone. That’s one good reason why it pays for businesses to have Facebook Pages. That’s not the only impressive number though.

Google Buzz is launched

The new product Google launched to enter the social media game. It helps you share, communicate and comment on topic being discussed by your friends.

Surepay.com.ng Nigeria online payment gateway

SurePay is a payment gateway that allows website owners and businesses to receive payments on their website from Interswitch, Etranzact, MasterCard and Visa (ATM) cardholders. The platform is easy and helps websites owners accept payment both locally and internationally.

Naijacards.net is a scam stay off the site

We reported a phishing website that claims to sell recharge cards (MTN, Zain, Etisalat etc) to you at 15% discount. What it simply does is to collect your ATM card details and use it for another purpose.

Spanish Telecom May Seek To Charge Search Engines

The CEO of Spanish telecom company Telefonica might soon try to obtain some money from Google and its rivals. Cesar Alierta said today that search engines’ popularity creates something of a burden for his organization, and that he’d like Telefonica to share in their profits.

MTN will implement rate decrease on 1 March 2010

MTN will implement the Mobile Termination Rate (MTR) decrease on 1 March 2010. This was revealed in a statement released by Robert Madzonga, acting chief corporate services officer at MTN South Africa.

Google Buzz: What It Means for Twitter and Facebook

So far, Google has failed to launch a successful social web product to U.S. Internet users. Orkut has taken off in including Brazil and India, but not in North America. Wave is a neat concept, but it has proven too abstract to catch on.

Google is releasing information about a “highly sophisticated and targeted attack” on their corporate infrastructure that occurred last month.
Apple Acquires Quattro

We’re hearing that Apple is buying mobile advertising company Quattro Wireless for $275 million. This jives with reports earlier this evening of a deal between the two companies. Our source says that there was initially talk of a $400 million pricetag, but that has since come down. We’ve also heard that Microsoft may have been very interested as well.

In the beginning, the web was developed as a stateless platform and ever since it has evolved to something meaningful and social. With the advent of programming languages that helped maintain states on the web so as to have a meaningful experience, the web now mimics the normal social life.

To protect businesses and investment there need to be an enabling law to this effect. ‘Gbenga Sesan Executive Director of Paradigm Initiative Nigeria initiated the bill.

Nigeria intensifies focus on broadband connectivity

Nigeria’s Communications Commission (NCC), Earnest Ndukwe, has called for focus on broadband internet connectivity by emerging markets as a means of forging ahead in global competitiveness.

2010, the year of mobility? According to Julien Blin, Principal Analyst and CEO at technologies research and consulting services company JBB Research, based in USA, the African continent will undergo a higher focus on 4G technologies, cheaper, more capable smartphones and improved mobile social networking, payment and entertainment services for its end users in the current year, with 2010 World Cup the main driver in South Africa.

Overview: Will the future look bright for telecoms in Nigeria?

That no modern economy can be sustained without an integral growth in Information Communications Technology (ICT) is widely acknowledged. The ICT penetration in Nigeria in 1999 when the transition to democratic rule occurred was very low, and less than 1 percent of the population had access to telephone.

I last reviewed Facebook Users across (Selected) African countries in August here. Another look at the users’ increment is outlined below. Let’s first take a look at Nigeria’s Facebook Users;
Total: 901,840

Fastecash: a Nigerian e-Payment platform

As the internet users’ grow by the day in Nigeria, one of the challenges of growing the ecommerce side of it has been largely online payment solution. Interswitch is the topmost of all with their ATM cards which is usable online and issued by all Nigerian banks.

Nigerian Search Pattern; Google Zeitgeist take a look

Earlier in the week Bing release its search stats and not long Google also released its annual Zeitgeist. Google’s report is broad and includes Nigeria.

Rave of acquisition; Google acquires appJet, Apple acquires Lala

As the battle between the two companies grows, the needs to shop for creative and talented startups have seen them acquire startups here and there. Google acquired gizmo5 and adMob last month and now has acquired appJet the develop of etherPad. On the other hand Apple also acquired Lala the cloud music streaming platform that have gain wide following.

Microsoft and Yahoo seals deal

The Microsoft-Yahoo search and advertising deal, first announced back in July, has just been finalized by the two companies.

Back in October, it was revealed that details were still being mulled over because of the deal’s complexity, but this afternoon, the companies put out a statement to let the world know that the deal is now complete.

Google Gets Into The DNS Business. Here’s What That Means

Google just announced Google Public DNS, a new service that lets consumers use Google as their DNS service provider. The benefits to users are a theoretically faster and more stable browsing experience, and some additional security against malware type sites. The benefit to Google – tons more data, and some potential revenue.

Amazon and Vente-Privee in talks over 2 billion Euro acquisition, say sources

US retailing giant Amazon is in deep and secret negotiations with Vente-Privee, the French private sales club which has taken the ecommerce and fashion industries by storm, our sources say.

Twitter Debuts New Mobile Site, Eats Its Own Dogfood

If you use Twitter frequently on your smartphone, there’s a good chance you use a native Twitter client. Between apps like Tweetie on the iPhone, Twidroid on Android, and Seesmic on Blackberry, there’s no shortage of quality apps that put advanced features at your fingertips. But, according to a post that just went live on the Twitter blog, there are still plenty of people who navigate to m.twitter.com, the Twitter mobile site that’s about as spartan as they come. Tonight, Twitter is showing off a preview of the new mobile site it’s working on, housed at mobile.twitter.com. And it’s a big improvement.

Every year the World Economic Forum picks a couple dozen or so up-and-coming technology startups from around the world and dubs them Technology Pioneers. In the past, Technology Pioneers have included Google and Mozilla. Last year, Mint, Etsy, and Brightcove joined the club.

Digg.com clocks Five
It was exactly five years ago today that digg.com went live as a simple site where you could vote on your favorite content from around the web. (Here is our initial profile from over 4 years ago.) They’ve grown a lot since then, to over 40 million monthly visitors and 80 employees, founder Kevin Rose writes today.

Canopy Financial, Inc. provides technology-enabled electronic payment, account management, and investment technology platforms for health savings accounts, flexible spending accounts, and health reimbursement arrangements.
Searching retail sites can be frustrating at times. While many retailers try to present product search in a visually appealing way, search can often be slow or difficult to refine.
A battle has been brewing for months now: Google and Facebook both want to be the social layer that sits on top of every site on the Internet. So far, at least in mindshare, Facebook has been winning this battle with Facebook Connect. Google’s offering, Friend Connect, is the sibling that gets no respect. But that could change starting today with some new features and functionality.

Imagine this: once a happy child with a lot of friends, little Jack has started spending many hours per day on social networking sites such as Facebook, which has turned him into a pale asocial freak. Oh, if only he’d never touched that cursed box we call the computer, he’d be a healthy young man now!

Experts had high expectations heading into Google’s third quarter earnings report, but that was no problem for the search giant as it beat estimates in almost every way. Google’s stock is now heading up in after-hours trading.
