Nigeria and the web
As far back as year 2000, it was only handful of Nigerians online, but over the years we have seen the number grew astronomically. Consequently, Nigeria remains the number one online in Africa. The last time I checked the number of Nigerians on Facebook, it was less than 220k. Far behind South Africa which is over 800k. A look closely at the trend, I’ve seen quite a number of Nigerian celebs using Facebook, I also joined their fans though. I love the trend and begin to see the possibilities that abound for us.
In my own view; D’banj rules Facebook, while 2Face rules Myspace. For a more detail about who rules online social networks read “Who rules social Networking in Nigeria?”.
The most obvious in the corporate world is buyright. I never used Facebook without seeing their ads. In fact a colleague in the office just went to buy a digital watch from their office just because he saw the ad on Facebook. I will give them credit on that! Google also is currently worth $200billion, I will say it’s at close tie with Nigeria’s GDP.
Come to think of it, with the level of infrastructure in Nigeria and the cut-throat cost of internet connection, it’s commendable for Nigeria to have gotten to this level.
