World Cup Fever grips Nigeria, Internet comes alive

No doubt, football remains a top unifying medium for Nigerians irrespective of their tribal or religious differences. Like every other competitions that involves Nigeria, this year’s world cup is no exception! After a promising performance from the Eagles against Argentina despite the loss, most Nigerians still believe that Nigeria can go beyond the group stage in this competition!

Before the world cup, English premiership was the main sporting event that gets attention of Nigerians. The internet being a medium for exchange of information and the advent of social media; it has given them a better platform to engage themselves and share the national patriotism.

Some Nigerian sites have really keyed into this vast opportunities to give Nigerians local content during and after the world cup. In our April web ranking, Fansconnectonline.com a Nigerian site, caught our attention with its massive rise in visits (75th spot), and this last month it made our top 15 sites in Nigeria.

Nigeria’s top site, nairaland.com also shows a strong sign of being the top platform with over 5,114 post and more than 72,244 views on world cup related threads. Not discounting the twitter talks on the worldcup from Nigerians, the fever is really griping Nigeria!

Some other sites that covers the world cup in Nigeria are; Complete Sports, NaijaSuperFans.com, Facebook group.
